The 80th Oscars

The Oscars came on Sunday night. It was the lowest rated viewing in Oscar history. I think Jon Stewart did a good job hosting. There were a few slip ups, literally. Miley Cryus, John Travolta and Colin Farrell almost slipped on the way to the mic. Cutting Marketa Irglova off when she went up to say her thank you speech was horrible, but they quickly redeemed themselves by bringing her back out after commercials. They claim it was an accident.

I missed most of the red carpet, but caught the show. Overall, it was...RED! Red seemed to be the color of choice for many Academy Award attendees while one shoulder strapped dresses seemed to be the style of choice. We also saw strapless dresses, open backs [[classy, not going too low and mostly criss cross straps]], the color black, draping and pleating.
Katherine Heigl looked gorgeous while channeling old hollywood glam in Escada. Anne Hathaway also donned red in the form of a one shoulder strapped, draped Marchesa dress adorned with rosettes. I didn't love the dress, but I did think she looked pretty. Ruby Dee, Heidi Klum, Helen Mirren and Miley Ray Cyrus also joined the group of Red Vixens.


Francesca Lo Schiavo, who won for her set decoration on Sweeney Todd, wore an amazing deep blue dress with black sequence trim around the bustline and straps.
Hillary Swank wore a black, tulle, one shoulder strapped, peek-a-boo gown detailed with leaflet appliqués by Versace. I don't know why people like to hate on Swank when she shows off her femininity. I think that she looked beautiful. The dress hugged her body just right and showed off her amazing shape.
Best Leading Actress winner Marion Cotillard caused a buzz in a mermaid inspired Jean Paul Gaultier design. Like many others on the red carpet Sunday night she bared her back with criss cross straps. The dress wasn't spectacular, but I did like the silhouette. Cotillard managed to get away with it but it may not have worked on someone else. Keri Russell chose to go with a simple champagne Nina Ricci gown. Russell looked sleek and elegant dressing the gown with an amazing H. Stern necklace [[that made the outfit]].


I didn't see them on the red carpet, but when I looked at pictures the next day I thought Calista Flockhart and Diane Lane looked nice. Calista Flockhart wore vintage Valentino in light blue and greyish brown. Diane Lane wore a chocolate brown Grecian-like dress by David Meister. Once again, one shoulder strap!

Jennifer Hudson looked okay in Roberto Cavalli. I think she could have done better. The white empire waist dress with a snake skin-esque trim just didn't seem to fit her top properly which took away from the overall look.
Tilda Swinton won Best Supporting Female Actress for her role in Michael Clayton. I didn't understand her dress at all. She wore a black Alber Elbaz for Lanvin dress that was sleeveless on one side and had a sleeve on the other. Apparently it was silk but when I saw it I thought, "What is that? Velvet???" I think it was the sheen of the dress that caused the fabric to look weird. Rebecca Miller, Daniel Day-Lewis' wife, was by far the worst of the night! I think she actually wore velvet. I understood her outfit less than Tilda Swinton's ensemble. I was so distracted by what she was wearing that I didn't even notice Daniel Day-Lewis' brown shoes and trim on his tuxedo until the next day.
